'Flappy Bird' to shutdown

Flappy Bird, a mobile game that has taken the world by storm, will be removed by its creator Dong Nguyen in less than 22 hours. He says the removal has nothing to do with legal issues, and he’s not planning to sell Flappy Bird but will continue making games.

The announcement is a surprise, considering it came just a day after a new game update that included new birds and UI tweaks. Flappy Bird has been downloaded over 50 million times and is making about US$50,000 in ad revenue a day. It works very simply: players navigate a bird through a series of pipes by tapping repeatedly on the screen. The game has drawn widespread praise but also scorn. Some critics allege that he has employed bots to boost the game’s standings in the Apple App Store.

When asked about these criticisms, Nguyen told a Newsweek reporter on Twitter: “It doesn’t matter. Don’t you think? If I did fake it, should Apple let it live for months?”

Flappy Bird has even inspired a parody, aptly named ‘Squishy Bird’.

While the exact reason for the removal is unclear, he hinted that it may have been due to the media attention he’s getting. He tweeted: “Press people are overrating the success of my games. It is something I never want. Please give me peace.”

Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead. So what will happen to Mockingjay I and II?

I know all of you, Hunger Games fans, are devastated to what happened to Philip Seymour Hoffman. And all of you are now questioning to what will happen to the Mockingjay I and II without Mr. Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee. So here's the answer from The Wall Street Journal.

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death Sunday will not impact the scheduled release of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” Parts 1 and 2 in November of 2014 and 2015 and will require only modest rewriting, according to a person close to the production.

Mr. Hoffman, who played games-master-turned-rebel Plutarch Heavensbee, had finished shooting virtually all of his scenes for Part 1 save for one in which he did not play a significant role, the person said.

For Part 2, he had about a week left of shooting, including one scene that will have to be written with a different character taking the spot of Plutarch Heavensbee.

Because most of Mr. Hoffman’s scenes were complete, director Francis Lawrence and his team are said to be confident they can complete filming without the character or the films being substantially changed.

“The Hunger Games” was a rare turn in a major studio franchise for Mr. Hoffman, who acted in low budget independent movies for most of his career.

In a statement, “Hunger Games” studio Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. called Mr. Hoffman “one of the most gifted actors of our generation” and said “we’re very fortunate that he graced our ‘Hunger Games’ family.”
